Conquering the Soundbite!
by Thomas W. McKee

Successful presenters today have to soundbite their presentations. They have to be able to state their entire presentation in a one-liner.

What is a soundbite?

The soundbite is the memorable one-liner that makes your point one to remember. The better a presenter develops a soundbite, the easier the presentation becomes. In fact, the well written soundbite almost delivers itself.

Examples of soundbites!

  • Caesar: "I came, I saw, I conquered!"
  • Woodrow Wilson: "The war to make the world safe for democracy."
  • Nike: "Just do it!"
  • Pepsi: "You've got the right one baby!"
  • General Electric: "GE: We bring good things to light!"

    The Key To Effective Soundbites

The key to effective soundbites is in locating the "felt need." The soundbite must answer the question of every listener, "What's in it for me?" Using a soundbite without a felt need is like taking antibiotics without having an infection.

Think of our last election speeches and the candidates' "soundbites."

  • Bush: "You need a President that you can trust."
  • Clinton: "We need a change."
  • Perot: "I can get it done."

Which candidate spoke to the greatest felt need?
